Novelis is the leading sustainable aluminum solutions provider and world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling. The company is a global leader in the production of innovative aluminum products and solutions and the world’s largest recycler of aluminum. Novelis is a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited, an industry leader in aluminum and copper, and the metals flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, a multinational conglomerate based in Mumbai. Novelis was established in 2004 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
Global Location Strategies was commissioned by Novelis, an American industrial aluminum company, to identify a location for its new aluminum rolling mill. The facility will be the first fully integrated aluminum rolling mill in the United States in over 40 years. The project requirements included a site with significant acreage, rail, and interstate accessibility, a highly skilled workforce, and an abundance of fully renewable energy. Additionally, speed-to-market was critical.
Considering Novelis’ project requirements, GLS evaluated nearly 100 properties across 10 states. A shortlist of locations were elevated into desktop review and analysis, including virtual site visits. The top-performing location then received a comprehensive field site visit from the stakeholder team.
In 2022, Novelis announced its selection of Bay Minette, Baldwin County, Alabama for its $2.5 billion integrated rolling mill, creating 1,000 high-paying jobs. The facility, which aims to be net carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2, will be powered with renewable energy, use recycled water, and operate as a zero-waste facility. Novelis expects the facility to be operational in 2025.
