Finding our place in this new world
While this pandemic is disrupting the lives of nearly everyone in some way, food-insecure individuals – who numbered over 37 million, including over 11 million children, in 2018 – will face particular challenges, and the number of people who experience food insecurity is already increasing.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, food insecurity has remained persistently elevated at record levels. Food insecurity is a concept meant to capture not only a need for food but whether there are insufficient financial resources in the household to make additional food purchases. Food insecurity rates can be predicted by the unemployment rate, which explains upwards of 65 percent of the increase in food insecurity among households with children that have occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of children who qualify for subsidized school meals aren’t getting them — often because they can’t get to them.
Rather than dwelling on the problem, we want to be part of the solution.
This Fall, Global Location Strategies is inviting you, our network of clients, communities, and industry colleagues to join us in supporting Communities In Schools (CIS), a dynamic organization that working in schools and beyond the classroom to ensure all students have the same opportunity to succeed, whether they are learning at school or at home. Since this organization’s mission aligns so closely with our purpose and core values, we want to help them close the food insecurity gap during this crisis.
To accomplish this goal, Global Location Strategies Founding Principal, Didi Caldwell, has proposed a Matching Funds Challenge to raise funds to feed students over the two-week Winter Break. Even though Greenville County Schools offers feeding sites, many families do not have the resources to access them. GLS hopes to provide food for those families in need by delivering meal packages that will feed a student over the holidays.
Our goal is to raise $6,000 which will help feed 100 students over the winter break. Each $60 package will contain items for 3 meals a day for 2 weeks for 1 student. To help reach this our goal, of feeding 100 students, please join us in our Matching Funds Challenge where GLS will match donations, dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000. Starting with Didi Caldwell’s personal donation of $500, the fundraising campaign will be open from now through December 1, 2020.
We encourage you to find your place in this new world and assist us in ensuring the prosperity of students in the U.S. and beyond, for today and for generations to come. Your contribution, big or small, will help ensure these students will get the nutrition they need.
We are grateful for your generosity and thankful for your willingness to help us empower those who will shape our future.
